Background
OBOE IPR is majority owned by more than 30 researchers within Organic Bioelectronics, that is, research focusing on biological and medtech applications of organic materials with electronic and related functionalities. The company was established in 2007 to manage patent rights and know how emerging from research activities. At that time, the founding members were part of the OBOE research environment, spanning expertise from Linköping University, (Laboratory of Organic Electronics), the Karolinska Institute, the Swedish Royal Institute of Technology, and the Swedish research institute RISE Acreo. The environment was initially funded by the Swedish Foundation for Strategic Research and later by Sweden’s innovation agency Vinnova. As of 2026, OBOE IPR has spun off two companies, Celluminova AB in 2010 and Iontronics AB in 2023. Celluminova AB focuses on the commercialization of biomarkers, in particular for the detection and visualization of stem cells and cancer stem cells, enabling applications in research and clinical settings. Iontronics AB focuses on the commercialization of ion pump technology.
EU Projects
OBOE IPR is currently also engaged in three European Union funded research and innovation projects:
- BioSWITCH – focusing on an implantable iontronic system for precise and programmable drug delivery in cancer treatment.
https://bioswitch-project.eu/ - EnterBio – developing bioelectronic tools to interface the nervous system via the gut, enabling new approaches to sensing and neuromodulation.
https://enterbio.org/ - Iconic – developing electrochemical technologies to convert nitrate and carbon streams into valuable chemicals, with implications for environmental restoration and sustainable production.
